Exercise : Photo Editing

Lecture :
Today we didn't learn about camera technique , but we learn about how to edit photo by using Photoshop. Mr.Vinod asked us to bring along our laptop last week so everyone of us managed to start smoothly. Then, Mr.Vinod taught us on how to edit a photo . He taught us how to change a colour photo into black& white, how to remove pimples, how to filter and so on. Later, he asked us to pick a photo that we took last week and start to edit .At the end, he told us to print that photo at PhotoMedia which is located at SS2/67.

Instructions:
After capturing images around the campus select the best image in your estimation, edit and prepare the image file with white borders (as directed during the Editing exercise) and print an 8x10 print from Photomedia.

Exercise:

Picture after editing

Feedback:

Reflection:
Experience:
Photoshop is complicated and not easy but it's not totally unknown for me as when I was in high school, I was in magazine club so I did some editing for some pages of the school magazine. But I almost forgot how to edit a photo like making the background blur or cut a people...
Mr.Vinod  said that, sometimes the editors use red filter to whitening faces or for landscape editing.
Also, he said that if we have bright sky, we can enhance that sky by using red filter. However, it's not very good to use red filter when you have people.

Observation :
I noticed that to make a photo black n white, there's not only one way. It can be 1.black & white 2.desaturate .
If wanna make a picture brighter, go to Levels or by using Curves.
For exposure, it will only work if you only taken picture by ourselves, download pic from internet will not work. because there's no info recorded. Here comes to my favorite part, I've learnt how to let pimple go away, increase the freather if wanna blur the side (lasso tool) .

Findings:
*shift is to +
*alt is to -
full frame means did not crop.
I found that it's not easy to master the technique of using Photoshop, but it's interesting when it comes to erase stuff behind, or removing stuff that doesn't look nice.

Exercise 4b : Principles underpinning composition

Lecture:

For today's class, Mr.Vinod started off with giving us feedback on our previous work. He said that we could do even better by practicing more and more. Then, he started to brief us about today's topic- Principles underpinning composition. After that, he gave us about 2 hours to take photos around the campus in order to let us understand more about previous exercise. We showed him the photos we have taken once we have done and feedback will be given. Before class ended, Mr.Vinod assigned us assignment about Principles.

Photos taken during our class:

1.
2.

3.

4.

Instructions:
Exercise 4b: Principles underpinning composition.
Capture 4 Images adhering to any of the mentioned principles below:
Domination/Emphasis • Isolation • Balance • Repetition
Alignment • Contrast • Rhythm • Symmetry/Asymmetry
Harmony • Perspective
Print all 4 images on an A4 as instructed in class.
(Put to use what you have learnt in the Zone system exercises here)
4b) Principals underpinning composition (5%)
Marking Criteria: The image must show evidence of the dominant principle used and the supporting principles (if any) underpinning the composition. The principles underpinning the image must be named and should be visible within the image. Students must showcase their knowledge on exposure using the zone system.

                                                                         (Rhythm)

                                      8
                                                                           (Contrast)

Feedback : Felicia, the exercise was good. You seem to have acquired the knowledge and therefore was able to execute the exercise with what seems to be particular ease. Good. However, there were a few pictures that were in colour, and were composed all that well, this needs to be addressed. It is not always possible to frame a shot perfectly hence cropping always comes in handy. I do hope the last few pictures were taken after the exercise was introduced and not before =)

Reflection:

Experience :
I felt that it become more easy for me to take photo based on Rule of thirds as I already have experienced it on last week . After Mr.Vinod gave me feedback on the spot , I kind of know what he was trying to ask us to achieve.  Besides, he said that it's find to crop the photos as long as it's not more than 30% of the original photo. I think this is fair enough as we couldn't really take the picture down with the perfect distance every time.

Observation:
I noticed that Mr.Vinod often remain us to plan carefully before embark taking photos. I think this is because without planning everything will not be fine. He also said that when one photo is not pleasing, that means there's no order. I like this quotation of his as it make sense for me .

Findings:
I found that after this lesson , I've learnt that photos can be separate with different kind of principles. like rhythm, harmony and balance, it makes me feel like photo really tells thousand words. It's not like the word we speak but it express some kind of feeling itself.
